Respecting the Fabric of Historic Homes
Decorating a period property is vastly different from painting a modern new-build. Older homes—particularly Victorian and Edwardian properties found throughout St Albans, Hitchin, and Hertford—were built to "breathe". Sealing their walls with modern, impermeable vinyl emulsions is a recipe for trapped moisture, flaking paint, and severe damp problems.
At Screpy Decorators, we deeply understand the unique requirements of heritage properties and listed buildings.
Our Heritage Decorating Approach
- Breathable Coatings: We use specialized breathable paints (like Earthborn Claypaint, Little Greene Distemper, and Farrow & Ball Estate Emulsion) that allow lime plaster to release moisture naturally.
- Sympathetic Preparation: We never use aggressive mechanical stripping methods that could damage delicate original plasterwork or historical woodwork.
- Cornice and Coving Restoration: We meticulously clean layers of old paint from intricate ceiling roses and cornices, restoring their sharp, original details.
- Traditional Colour Schemes: If desired, we can advise on historically accurate colour palettes that honor the era of your home while ensuring it feels warm and inviting.
