Precision Wallpaper Hanging & Alignment

Hanging designer wallpaper is a specialized craft that leaves no room for error. Modern high-end papers — whether featuring metallic foil accents, bold geometric patterns, or delicate fabric weaves — demand absolute precision. A single misaligned millimeter or an incorrect adhesive choice can ruin an expensive roll.

At Screpy Decorators, we bring years of experience to every wallcoverings project. We understand the specific characteristics of different paper weights, soaking times, and wall absorptions, ensuring your feature walls look spectacular and stand the test of time.

Step 1: Wall Assessment & Preparation

The secret to a perfect wallpaper finish is what lies beneath. We strip all old wallpaper using steamers and scraper tools, followed by washing down the walls to remove glue residues. We repair all cracks and plaster imperfections using high-performance fillers, then sand the surface smooth using our dustless Mirka sanding system. Finally, we size the walls with Bartoline wallpaper size or diluted adhesive. This seals the porous plaster, regulating absorption and allowing the paper to slide easily into position during installation.

Step 2: Measuring & Lining Paper (Cross-Lining)

For premium designer wallcoverings, we always recommend cross-lining. We hang 1000-grade to 1400-grade lining paper horizontally across the walls. This absorbs excess moisture from the finish paper's adhesive, prevents joints from shrinking and opening as they dry, and covers minor surface imperfections. We use laser levels to map out the room, calculating pattern repeats and matching offsets. We plan each drop so the pattern is centered visually around fireplaces, doors, or windows, ensuring a symmetrical look. For math calculations, read our guide: Wallpaper Calculator Guide.

Step 3: Paste Application

Different papers require different pasting methods and adhesives. Traditional wallpapers require pasting the paper and allowing it to soak (booking) so the fibers expand before hanging. Modern non-woven papers allow paste-the-wall application, which is cleaner and faster. We match the exact adhesive to your paper type — using Solvite Extra Strong for standard rolls, Metylan Direct for non-wovens, or heavy-duty clay-based starch adhesives (like Roman Pro-543) for luxury thick vinyls and fabric backings.

Step 4: Hanging & Smoothing

We align each drop meticulously to our plumb line. Using specialized plastic smoothers or soft-bristle wallpaper brushes, we sweep out all air bubbles and creases from the center to the edges. We butt-joint each seam flush — never overlapping the edges — ensuring seamless joins. On textured, flocked, or metallic papers, we avoid using hard seam rollers, which can crush the delicate embossing or leave shiny glue marks.

Step 5: Trim & Cleanup

Using razor-sharp snap-off utility knives, we trim the excess paper at the ceiling line and skirting boards for clean, straight boundaries. We cut carefully around sockets, light switches, and radiators. We immediately wipe away any excess paste from the face of the paper, moldings, and trim using clean water and damp sponges to prevent stains or residue when dry.

Common Questions

Wallpapering FAQs

Can you hang wallpaper over old wallpaper?

We strongly advise against hanging new wallpaper over old layers. The moisture in the new adhesive will soften the glue of the underlying paper, causing it to bubble, blister, or lift off the wall entirely. Additionally, any texture, overlaps, or seams in the old paper will telegraph through, ruining the smooth finish of your new designer paper. We always steam-strip and scrape walls back to the original plaster before prepping.

How do I know if my walls need lining paper first?

Lining paper (cross-lining) is highly recommended for high-end designer papers, metallic foils, and thin wallpapers. It serves three critical purposes: it covers minor hairline cracks and texture variations in the plaster, it creates an even absorption rate so the adhesive dries uniformly (preventing seams from shrinking and opening), and it provides a stable grip layer. If your walls have minor plaster flaws, or if you are using delicate papers, lining paper is a must for a flawless finish.

What is a pattern repeat and why does it affect the cost?

A pattern repeat is the vertical distance between two identical points in the design. Straight matches need to be aligned directly opposite each other, whereas drop matches offset the pattern by a fraction (e.g., half-drop). Large pattern repeats mean more waste, as each vertical drop must be shifted to match the previous one, meaning you get fewer drops per roll and need to buy more rolls. It also requires extra layout planning time for the decorator to center the design.

Can you wallpaper bathrooms and kitchens?

Yes, but you must choose the right type of wallpaper and adhesive. Bathrooms and kitchens have high humidity and steam. We recommend using heavy-duty vinyl wallpapers or specialized splashproof papers. We also apply moisture-resistant primers and strong fungicide adhesives (like Solvite Extra Strong or specialized vinyl adhesives) to prevent mold growth and ensure the paper doesn't peel back at the seams.

Should I buy the wallpaper myself or can you source it?

In most cases, clients prefer to purchase the wallpaper rolls themselves to ensure they get their exact desired design and batch code. However, we highly recommend consulting with us first so we can help you calculate the exact number of rolls needed, accounting for pattern repeats, waste margins, and wall dimensions. If you prefer, we can source lining paper, specialized adhesives, and primers ourselves.
