How to Calculate Wallpaper Rolls: A Professional Decorator's Guide
Ordering wallpaper can be a stressful part of home decorating. Order too few rolls, and you risk running out mid-project—and if you order more later, you might receive a different batch number, resulting in subtle but visible color differences on your wall. Order too many rolls, and you waste money on designer papers that cannot be returned.
Calculating how many rolls you need becomes more complicated when dealing with pattern repeats (such as straight matches, drop matches, or large mural designs).
In this guide, we share the exact formula we use as professional decorators in Welwyn Garden City and St Albans to calculate wallpaper requirements accurately.
Standard Wallpaper Dimensions
In the UK, a standard wallpaper roll (often called a “metric roll”) measures:
- Width: 53cm (0.53m)
- Length: 10.05m
Knowing these numbers, we can calculate how many vertical drops we can get out of a single roll and how many drops are needed to cover the width of your wall.
Step 1: Measure Your Walls
Measure the wall width and height using a metal tape measure (fabric tapes can stretch).
- Width: Measure the total horizontal width of the wall.
- Height: Measure from the skirting board to the ceiling (or coving). Measure in 3 different spots, as floors and ceilings are rarely perfectly level. Use the largest height measurement.
Example: Let’s assume a wall width of 4.0m and a height of 2.4m.
Step 2: Calculate the Number of Drops Needed
Divide the total wall width by the width of the wallpaper roll (0.53m). Always round up to the next whole number.
$$\text{Drops Needed} = \frac{\text{Wall Width}}{\text{Roll Width}}$$
Using our example: $$\text{Drops Needed} = \frac{4.0\text{m}}{0.53\text{m}} = 7.54 \rightarrow \text{Round up to } 8\text{ drops}$$
Step 3: Calculate the Length of Each Drop (Accounting for Pattern Repeat)
This is where most DIY calculations go wrong. If your wallpaper has a pattern repeat, you must add the repeat height to every drop except the first one. We also add a 5cm trim allowance (2.5cm at the top and 2.5cm at the bottom) to allow for trimming along ceiling and skirting lines.
If No Pattern Repeat (Free Match):
$$\text{Drop Length} = \text{Wall Height} + 0.05\text{m (Trim Allowance)}$$ $$\text{Drop Length} = 2.4\text{m} + 0.05\text{m} = 2.45\text{m}$$
If Pattern Repeat Exists (e.g., 64cm Drop Match):
Check the label on your wallpaper roll for the “Repeat” measurement. $$\text{Drop Length} = \text{Wall Height} + 0.05\text{m} + \text{Pattern Repeat}$$ $$\text{Drop Length} = 2.4\text{m} + 0.05\text{m} + 0.64\text{m} = 3.09\text{m}$$
Step 4: Calculate Drops per Roll
Divide the total length of a roll (10.05m) by your calculated drop length. Round down to the nearest whole number. This tells you how many full vertical strips you can cut from one roll.
$$\text{Drops per Roll} = \frac{\text{Roll Length (10.05m)}}{\text{Drop Length}}$$
- With No Repeat (2.45m drop): $$\text{Drops per Roll} = \frac{10.05\text{m}}{2.45\text{m}} = 4.10 \rightarrow \mathbf{4 \text{ drops per roll}}$$
- With 64cm Repeat (3.09m drop): $$\text{Drops per Roll} = \frac{10.05\text{m}}{3.09\text{m}} = 3.25 \rightarrow \mathbf{3 \text{ drops per roll}}$$
Step 5: Calculate Total Rolls Required
Divide the total number of drops needed (from Step 2) by the number of drops you get from a single roll (from Step 4). Round up to the next whole number.
$$\text{Rolls Required} = \frac{\text{Total Drops Needed}}{\text{Drops per Roll}}$$
- With No Repeat: $$\text{Rolls Required} = \frac{8\text{ drops}}{4\text{ drops per roll}} = \mathbf{2 \text{ rolls}}$$
- With 64cm Repeat: $$\text{Rolls Required} = \frac{8\text{ drops}}{3\text{ drops per roll}} = 2.67 \rightarrow \mathbf{3 \text{ rolls}}$$
[!IMPORTANT] The Golden Rule: Order a Spare Roll We always recommend ordering one extra roll beyond your mathematical calculation. It protects against hanging accidents, damage from pipes or switches, and leaves you with spare material in case you need to patch a section in the future. Unopened rolls can usually be returned for a refund within 30 days.
